By night in Florence

Cinemas, theatres, discotheques. The night life on offer in Florence is
in no way inferior to that of the other major Italian cities.
The latest major releases are available in cinemas throughout the city
centre and the suburbs. Then there are also cineclubs for lovers of
films no longer on general release, and in some cinemas, on set days,
there are showings of films in the original language (normally English).
The theatre offer is broad: the historic theatres offer the more classic
genres: opera, orchestra or chamber music and plays, but visitors can
also opt for lighter fare, such as musicals and satiric cabaret. After
the theatre you can dine in restaurants open till late at night. The
young Florentines tend to start the evening off in the fashionable bars
and cafés, where they sip an aperitif, mingle, chat and then move on to
the discotheques of the city, almost all in the centre, although there
are a few trendy venues in the suburban areas or just out of town. The
discos alter styles and music every evening, so that the same place is
always different for both DJ and public. In recent years there has also
been an expansion in the selection of available pubs, where you can
taste different types of beer and spend the evening listening to music.
Then there is no shortage of concerts by both Italian and foreign
artists, who include the Florentine theatres, stadiums and discos in
their tour calendars winter and - especially - summer. In the summer,
effectively, the night life spills out into the streets and into areas
not normally accessible which are opened for performances and films, and
duly provided with bar facilities.
